The former finance minister Yoshihiko Noda, a supporter of fiscal restraint, was elected on Tuesday as Prime Minister of Japan by Parliament, replacing Naoto Kan resigned.
M. Noda, 54, received 308 votes out of 475 votes cast in the all-powerful House of Representatives, controlled by the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) in power.
