Novak Djokovic defeats Rafael Nadal in Wimbledon final

WIMBLEDON: Novak Djokovic won his first Wimbledon title on Sunday, he beat defending champion Rafael Nadal 6-4, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 to do so.

Djokovic, who was guaranteed to take over the No. 1 ranking in Spanish on Monday, Nadal extended his rule over this season with a fifth straight head to head victory.

Djokovic secured the top spot only to reach the final. Opened the season with 41 consecutive victories, including the Australia Open title, but his 43 victories came to an end against Roger Federer in the semifinals of the French Open.

Nadal, as gracious as ever, is humble in defeat. This one got away from him though. He was nowhere near his most potent, apart from in the third set.

Djokovic goes up to collect his trophy. He looks like he can barely believe it, but although the applause is generous, the roar is notably absent. There are plenty of Nadal fans in there today. What a poor show from all concerned. Djokovic, though, is a deserving champion. I thought it would be over in four sets, but not like this.

Novak Djokovic won his first Wimbledon title and proved to be the best player in the world with an amazing victory over Rafael Nadal.

Djokovic came through 6-4 6-1 to 1-6, 6-3 and end the reign as Wimbledon champion Nadal, before overtaking Spanish as world number one on Monday.

It was his 50th win in 51 games and his fifth victory over Nadal this year.
