Legislation in Kyrgyzstan: small opposition Nationalist advance
Written by Sandeep Nehra
The nationalist opposition party Ata-Jourt arrived slightly ahead of legislative elections in Kyrgyzstan, a country that has been the scene of serious ethnic violence, according to the results for 95.24% of polling stations released Monday by the Electoral Commission.
Ata-Jourt, which is under investigation for incitement to hatred, has received the votes of 8.69% of registered voters, the Commission detailing its results based on registered electors on the electoral roll and not in relation voters.
No projections in terms of seats have yet been published.
Ata-Jourt ahead by a short head the Social Democratic Party of Kyrgyzstan (8.09%), a movement supporting the interim government came to power after the April 2010 revolution that overthrew President Kurmanbek Bakiyev, making 87 dead.
Then comes Ar-Namys (7.48%), the party openly supported by the Kremlin, then a new formation, Respublika (7.12%). The surprise comes from the worst score of the pro-government Ata-Meken (5.79%).
The other 24 parties contesting the election did not get the 5% of registered voters needed to be represented in Parliament.
The formation of a coalition capable of governing and building on an absolute majority in Parliament is the problem that the parties should resolve the new Constitution, adopted in June, established in Kyrgyzstan‘s first Parliamentary government in Central Asia.
The south of Kyrgyzstan deeply divided politically and ethnically, was the scene of violent clashes in June between the Kyrgyz and Uzbek minority majority.
